NEW YORK, USA: As a whole, the semiconductor equipment and materials industry has posted significant gains in 2010. Revenues have surged thanks in part to mobile devices, tablet computers and even the emerging solar market.
Emerging markets are expected to play a critical role going forward as established markets are becoming saturated. Competition is fierce in emerging markets, however, making it challenging for investors to differentiate industry leaders from laggards.
The Bedford Report examines the outlook for companies in the semiconductor equipment and materials industry and provides research reports on Cree Inc. and Veeco Instruments Inc.

LISLE, USA: Building on the success of its CMC connection system, Molex Incorporated introduces its second generation sealed, hybrid, high-density and modular connector system.
The CMX family uses a new CTX terminal system with a fully protected seal to deliver the ultimate in sealing performance. The CMX connector system is ideal for transportation powertrain applications, such as those found in engine control units, automatic gear boxes, suspension controllers and electrical parking brakes.
“Based on our 10 years of experience with the CMC product line, the next-generation CMX connection system offers significant improvements in product performance while remaining cost competitive,” says Selvan Wilhelm, global product manager, Molex.
“The unique feature for all new CMX connectors is the sophisticated design of the interfacial seal protection, which ensures the connector remains protected before mating, and during mating and unmating operations.”

Diodes Inc.’s programmable battery charger keeps portable products safe

DALLAS, USA: Diodes Inc. has introduced the APM860x lithium battery charger ICs. Provided in the U-DFN3030 14-pin package, the APM8600 and APM8601 provide a range of safety features designed to protect small form factor portable products during the charging process.
To ensure safe charging of products including mobile phones, media players and headsets, the single channel APM8600 and dual channel APM8601 continuously monitor lithium ion and lithium polymer cells for overvoltage, charge time and temperature. Providing up to 28V overvoltage protection, the APM8601 automatically selects between USB or DC inputs, and the APM8600 is a DC input only device.
The ICs’ charging algorithm covers all lithium cell charging phases, comprising pre-charging for deeply depleted cells, constant current / constant voltage fast charging and top-off charging to hold the cell at its full charge level. Maximum fast charging current is 1A, with charge current from the USB input set to either 100mA or 500mA depending on the logic level applied to the USEL input.
